Spotlight ... Charity Events

Tuesday, 7 June. 2011

September .... the summer's almost gone, kids are back at school and it's still a long way to Christmas

What better time to hold a charitable event?  Even better that there are four very simple ideas in September when you can gain customer loyalty and motivate your staff ...

"Wear Your Wellies Day"

"Wear Your Wellies Day" involves ... wearing wellies!  Encourage staff to wear wellies to work and customers to wear wellies on the day, with each person donating £2 to Action Medical Research.

For ideas on raising money and making the event extra fun, take a look at the official website's ideas page - Welly Wanging, Fill Your Boots, Funkiest Welly Competition and Welly Races then get everyone to "Wear Your Wellies"!

"Wear Your Wellies" raises much-needed funds for Action Medical Research, the leading UK medical research charity dedicated to saving and changing children's lives.  Founded in 1952 the charity has contributed to some of the most significant medical breakthroughs in recent history, beginning with the polio vaccine which has eradicated new cases of the disease in the UK.

"International Talk Like a Pirate Day"

Yes, this really exists!  Despite starting as a joke in the US by two friends in 1995, it has now spread across the world and is celebrated on 19 September each year by pirates and 'landlubbers' alike.

It be a perfect opportunity to "shiver your customers' timbers" and climb aboard me hearties, whilst raising funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care.  Why not go the whole hog and put on a complete Pirate Party?

Providing care for terminally ill patients, Marie Curie Cancer Care was established in 1948 and expect to care for over 31,000 people with cancer and other terminal illnesses this year alone.

Friday 30 September 2011 heralds the day put aside annually for the World's Biggest Coffee Morning, in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support.  And it's not just coffee mornings - despite the title, MacMillan encourage their supporters to do whatever suits them ... but have fun doing it!

Now in its 20th year (the event actually started in 1990 by a fundraising committee but went national in 1991), the event raises £millions to help improve the lives of people affected by cancer, both those living with it and also their families and carers.

.Restaurants Against Hunger

Running throughout September and October, Restaurants Against Hunger is an annual event to raise money for Action Against Hunger, the International humanitarian organisation committed to ending child hunger.

The idea is very simple - you register your restaurant on their website then invite diners, in September and October, to add a £1 to their bill; alternatively, you can donate money from one or more of the dishes on your menu.

Action Against Hunger is recognised as the leader in the fight against malnutrition, saving children's lives and providing communities with access to safe water and sustainable solutions to hunger.
